Weld County farmer wants more sun, less rain

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:26:50 GMT

PLATTEVILLE, Colo. (KDVR) — Colorado has been getting a lot of rain lately, and like most people say, “We need the moisture.” But according to a Weld County farmer, too much of a good thing is not good.Joe Miller, of Miller Farms, has been working the soil here all of his life. The 60-year-old will be the first to tell you all this H2O has had an impact on his farm. And it is not all good. "It needs sun. It's kind of like gas in your car. If you don’t put gas in, it doesn’t go. You don’t put sun in the crops, they don’t grow," Miller said.In any given year, Miller Farms will grow squash, peppers, onions, cantaloupe and sweet corn. This year, Miller said all this water has altered operations. When weather affects the farm, he says, it will affect your family.Farmers affected by weeks of rain and clouds Dave Carter is a volunteer manager for the Broomfield Farmer's Market and is well aware of the "too much of a good thing" scenario. "For produce folks right now, it's a challenge becau...

‘Smartphones’ for sharks: Scientists upgrade sensors to keep track of Cape Cod’s white sharks

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:26:50 GMT

Scientists monitoring the white shark population in the waters off Massachusetts’ Cape Cod are attaching improved sensors, including cameras, to the predators to help scientists keep track of their whereabouts and to keep beachgoers informed and safe, researchers said Tuesday. The program comes just as tourists are filling up hotels and rental properties on the Cape for the summer — and white sharks are returning in greater numbers to feed on the region’s abundant seals.Interactions between white sharks and humans are rare. But the risk is still there. There have been five in Massachusetts since 2012 — three of them classified as bites, one of which was fatal, said Greg Skomal, the state Division of Marine Fisheries shark expert.“So as a result, we’ve intensified our research off the Cape to study various aspects of white shark behavior,” Skomal said. For more than a decade, the fisheries division and the nonprofit Atlantic White Shark Conservancy...

Column: Can the Chicago Cubs awaken from a bad dream, or is this the new normal?

The mystery ailment to Seiya Suzuki remained a secret Tuesday night at Wrigley Field, though the Chicago Cubs right fielder was back in the starting lineup for the rain-delayed game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.“My body feels really good,” Suzuki said through an interpreter. “These past couple days I’ve just been dreaming. … I’ve been having those dreams of getting bullied. But I feel like I’m back.”That also sounded like a perfect explanation for what has been ailing the Cubs, who returned from a 4-6 West Coast trip nine games under .500 after starting the season 12-7.Maybe it all has been just a bad dream, and the Cubs suddenly will wake up against the division-leading Pirates, whom they play six times in their next nine games in home-and-away series. The Cubs have been pushed around since their hot start, posting a .347 winning percentage (16-30) and threatening to fall into sellers at the trade deadline for the third straight seas...

As head coach Matt Eberflus continues shaping his team in advance of training camp, here are four things we learned Tuesday at Halas Hall.1. Receiver Chase Claypool is dealing with “a few things” health-wise that are preventing him from practicing, Eberflus said.Yes, you read that correctly. “A few things.” As in plural. Claypool has been off the practice field the past three weeks with what was originally described as an unspecified soft-tissue injury. Now, per Eberflus, there is more than one thing to keep an eye on. And Claypool’s missed practice time is significant as he tries to take a big leap forward in his first full season with the Bears, develop/ing timing and building rapport with quarterback Justin Fields.“Training ca...
