2 off-piste skiers missing in avalanche near Mont Blanc

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:32:26 GMT

ROME (AP) — Rescue teams were searching Sunday for two off-piste skiers who were caught in an avalanche near Mont Blanc on Italy’s northern border with France, local authorities said. Two surviving skiers sounded the alarm shortly after the 1 p.m. avalanche on Val Veny, above Courmayeur, but low-lying clouds prevented helicopters from reaching the scene, Courmayeur Mayor Roberto Rota told Sky TG24.Rescuers were getting to the site by snowmobile, but Rota said the chances of finding the skiers alive was slim given the amount of time that had passed.Rota suggested the four skiers were amateurs who hadn’t gone up with a guide or proper avalanche safety equipment, though he added that avalanche airbags would have only been useful if rescuers were nearby and had gotten to the scene within the first 15-20 minutes.“Unfortunately, it’s 99% that those involved won’t make it,” he said. The avalanche risk Sunday for the area was a level-three “considerable” danger on a scale of five risk levels ...

BERLIN (AP) — Former Germany midfielder Sami Khedira watched as his brother Rani Khedira led Union Berlin to third place in the Bundesliga with a 2-0 win over visiting Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday.Rani Khedira was captain in place of the absent Christopher Trimmel and he broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute with the final say in a goalmouth scramble after a corner. His older brother, who last played for city rival Hertha Berlin before retiring in 2021, tried capturing the celebrations on his mobile phone.Frankfurt had created more chances but failed to put any away with Union goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow at his best for the home team.Union forward Sheraldo Becker had a fine strike ruled out for offside before substitute Kevin Behrens sealed the win after a long kick from Rönnow in the 75th. Behrens was quickest to the ball and he squeezed his shot through the legs of Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp for his fifth Bundesliga goal of the season. It stretched Union’s unbeaten run at ho...

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys acquired receiver Brandin Cooks in a trade with the Houston Texans on Sunday, adding a speedy veteran to play alongside CeeDee Lamb.Houston gets a fifth-round pick this year and a 2024 sixth-rounder in a deal reminiscent of a year ago when Dallas sent No. 1 receiver Amari Cooper to Cleveland for two late-round picks. The difference in the trades is the Texans will pay $6 million of Cooks’ $18 million salary. The Browns absorbed the entire $20 million owed to Cooper. It’s the fifth time Cooks has been traded, including a swap the day after he was taken 20th overall by Arizona in 2014. New Orleans acquired him for the 27th overall pick and a third-rounder that year.Cooks later went to New England, the Los Angeles Rams and the Texans in trades. The 29-year-old Cooks has six 1,000-yard seasons in nine years, with career highs of 1,204 yards with the Rams in 2018 and nine touchdowns with the Saints in 2015. Tik Tok estaría muy involucrado en la vida de los estadounidenses; CEO de la app lo revelaría al Congreso

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:32:26 GMT

Osimhen and Kvaratskhelia carrying Napoli to new heights

ROME (AP) — Victor Osimhen combines the characteristics of a classic No. 9 with the talents of a modern striker.Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s dribbling wizardry and passing abilities befuddle defenders in Italy and beyond.Individually, Osimhen and Kvaratskhelia are devastating enough. Together, they are leading Napoli to new heights game after game. The latest demonstration came when Osimhen scored a brace of headers and Kvaratskhelia earned and converted a penalty and set up two goals in Napoli’s 4-0 win at Torino in Serie A on Sunday. The victory moved the runaway leader a staggering 21 points ahead of second-place Inter Milan and a step closer to Napoli’s first Serie A title since Diego Maradona led the club to its only two Italian league championships back in 1987 and 1990.Osimhen started it off midway through the first half when he leaped above the defense to redirect in a corner with a towering header. After a couple of key saves from Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret — who is also quietly ...

ST. FRANCIS BAY, South Africa (AP) — Matthew Baldwin claimed his maiden title on the European tour in style Sunday by storming to a seven-shot victory at the SDC Championship in South Africa.Baldwin finished with a 4-under 68 on the St. Francis Links course for 18 under overall as his challengers fell away. There was no pressure on him as he came home but Baldwin still collected five birdies and just one bogey in his final round for a first win 11 years after he first earned his card to play on the European tour. The Englishman had to put his career on hold in 2015 because of illness and lost his card the following year. His comeback to the tour was then delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and he said his long-awaited victory was dedicated to his stepfather, who died last year.“I’m not 100 per cent sure what’s just happened,” the 37-year-old Baldwin said. “It’s been a tough few years so obviously to get the win means absolutely everything.“I can’t process it right now but it ...
