Wes Anderson is a uniqueness, and we should be thankful he exists. But what is he? With each film, he’s doubled down on his particular battery of obsessive ideas (the chockablock dioramas, the loopy yarn-spinning, the deadpan quasi-farce, the overwhelming retro design), so that after a quarter-century of filmmaking, The French Dispatch (2021) was so intensely Wes-y, with more twitches and textual jokes than anyone could assimilate in one viewing, it felt almost like an experimental film. You have to salute his sui-generis-ness, his cultural curiosity, his subject-matter wanderlust, his distinctive visual craft, his attention to detail (often it feels like his films are all detail), and, honestly, his capacity for indexing some kind of late-Millennial/Gen Z toybox nostalgia, the hermetic pleasure of which, for his legion of devotees, should not be underestimated. If you fight in that pajama-clad army, you don’t ask questions, you just go. His newest confabulation, Asteroid City, is W...Newsom plan would roll back access to police misconduct records

By Trân Nguyên | Associated PressSACRAMENTO — California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s administration has proposed an end to public disclosure of investigations of abusive and corrupt police officers, handing the responsibility instead to local agencies in an effort to help cover an estimated $31.5 billion budget deficit. The proposal, part of the governor’s budget package that he is still negotiating with the Legislature, has prompted strong criticism from a coalition of criminal justice and press freedom groups, which spent years pushing for the disclosure rules that were part of a landmark law Newsom signed in 2021.The law allows the state Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training to investigate and decertify police officers for misconduct, such as use of excessive force, sexual assault and dishonesty. It requires the commission to make public the records of decertification cases. The Newsom administration now wants to get rid of that transparency element. The commission says the pu...New Deal-era school buildings to be demolished in Salinas

The Alisal Community School building replaced the one-room school building that served the area since the early '30s. The project is Phase II of a $70 million initiative passed in 2016 to repair and update school infrastructure in the district. DENVER (KDVR) -- Rent is likely to grow again in the Denver metro, and marijuana prices may, too. Colorado marijuana has never been cheaper The COVID pandemic sparked a big change in marijuana prices. Sales reached their highest-ever levels between the summers of 2020 and 2021, and the price retailers pay for bulk cannabis has crashed ever since. The average market price for a pound of Colorado marijuana bud has been falling since early 2021, according to Colorado Department of Revenue figures. In January 2021, bud was at its highest price since 2016 at $1,731 per pound. By April 2023, it had shrunk to less than half that price at $649 per pound, the lowest price ever recorded since Colorado began its first legal marijuana sales. This month, though, retail prices have ticked upwards. The price for a pound of bud went from $649 to $703 in June. This is the first time retail has risen since October 2021.
