More companies setting ‘net-zero’ climate targets, but few have credible plans, report says BONN, Germany (AP) — A growing number of companies are pledging to cut their greenhouse gas emissions to ” net zero ” as part of global efforts to tackle climate change, but that goal is rarely supported by a credible plan, according to a report published Monday.The idea behind net zero is to stop adding planet-warming gas to the atmosphere, either by preventing the emissions in the first place or removing an equivalent amount through natural or technological means. Scientists say the world needs to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) compared with pre-industrial times.The net-zero goal has gained traction in recent years. (AP) — Officials dedicated a California skate park Sunday in honor of Tyre Nichols, a Black man who spent much of his youth in the state and was killed last January in what prosecutors said was a fatal beating by police in Tennessee during a traffic stop.An avid skateboarder, Nichols spent much time as a youth at the park on the outskirts of Sacramento. City officials and others held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly renovated skate park now named for Nichols. CHICAGO — Three teens and a woman are in the hospital after a shooting that happened near a CTA Red Line Station Sunday afternoon, according to the Chicago Fire Department.Fire officials said an EMS plan one was called around 2:40 p.m. where four people in total were taken to various hospitals from 15 West 95th Street, three with gunshot wounds and one other who fell and was injured during the commotion of the incident.The three victims who were shot were all teenagers, according to CFD.One victim, a 16-year-old male, was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, while two other 19-year-old males were taken to Trinity Hospital in fair condition, fire officials said.One adult female, 44, was taken to Trinity Hospital in good condition after falling during the incident."Running, screaming," said Savion Lesser, a witness describing the incident. American musician detained in Russia: state media (The Hill) - An American musician has been detained in Russia in connection with accusations of drug trafficking, according to multiple reports.  TASS reported Saturday that a Moscow court ordered Michael Travis Leake to remain in custody on charges of “large-scale illegal production, sale or trafficking of narcotic drugs” until August 6. The Russian news agency reported that his friend, Valeria Grobanyuk, was also arrested in connection to this case and that each of them could face up to 12 years in prison if convicted.  The Associated Press reported that Leake was suspected of selling mephedrone, which has effects that are similar to MDMA and cocaine. Man dies after morning shooting in Vallejo (KRON) -- A man died after a shooting Sunday morning in Vallejo, the city's police department announced in a press release. The shooting happened around 7:29 a.m. on the 100 block of Simonton Street. One dead, six injured in Antioch birthday party shooting Vallejo Police Department (VPD) officers arrived at the scene of the shooting and saw the man with at least one gunshot wound. Medical crews took him to the hospital where he later died.The victim's identity is not yet being released by officials. VPD said this is Vallejo's eighth homicide of 2023.No arrests have been made in this shooting.
